Why Brazil Should Be Your Next Bucket-List Destination (Yes, Even for Women Traveling Solo!)

Dona Marta sunrise Rio de Janeiro Brazil

Picture this: turquoise beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, lush jungles that seem to go on forever, and vibrant cities alive with music, color, and dance. If you’re wondering why Brazil should be your next destination, let me answer that with one word: magic. Brazil has a way of drawing you in with its rich culture, friendly people, and landscapes that will make you feel like you’re in a dream. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who just wants to unwind with a coconut in hand, Brazil offers it all.

But wait, there’s more! As a solo female traveler, I can assure you that Brazil is full of surprises, from gorgeous beaches where you can relax in peace to mountain hikes with views that’ll take your breath away. It’s a country that welcomes travelers, though it does come with some quirks. Sure, it’s not the safest place in the world (and I’ll get into that later), but if you’re smart and follow the right precautions, you can explore this beautiful country smoothly and hassle-free. Trust me, it’s worth it.

A Bit More About Brazil

Brazil is a huge, diverse country, stretching across South America with borders touching every country except Chile and Ecuador. You can explore vibrant cities like Rio de Janeiro, adventure in Iguazu Falls, and chill out on the beaches of Ilha Grande. Each region has its own vibe and magic, and it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement! You’ll hear Portuguese spoken everywhere, but don’t worry, most people, especially in tourist areas, will speak enough English to get you by.

Locals are famously friendly, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation, they’re often eager to share a smile or directions if you’re lost.

When planning your trip, I recommend spending at least 10-14 days. Rio alone deserves a few days to soak up the beaches, culture, and iconic sights. Ilha Grande is a laid-back island perfect for relaxation, while Iguazu Falls will leave you speechless. Now, let’s dive into the full Brazil experience, trust me, it’s worth every second!

My Itinerary

Here’s how I went from one adventure to the next. I started in Rio de Janeiro, a city that’s never short on excitement. After soaking in the vibrant culture and exploring the local beaches and hikes, I hopped on a van to the famous Ilha Grande, a dreamy island that made me feel like I’d stepped into a tropical paradise. From there, I flew to Foz do Iguaçu, where I marveled at the breathtaking Iguazu Falls. Each place was more spectacular than the last, and I’m here to share the best parts of my journey with you!

  • Rio de Janeiro: Sun, samba, hikes, and the iconic beaches and Christ the Redeemer statue.
  • Ilha Grande: A tranquil island escape with beaches you only see in postcards.
  • Foz do Iguaçu: A jaw-dropping waterfall experience you’ll never forget.

Best Time to Visit Brazil

Brazil is one of those countries that’s great to visit year-round, but the best time depends on where you’re going. Rio de Janeiro is pretty much perfect all year, but the dry season (May to October) is better for hiking and outdoor activities. Ilha Grande is fantastic year-round, though if you’re aiming for fewer crowds, visit during the shoulder seasons in April or November. As for Foz do Iguaçu, the best time to go is from March to May or September to November. You’ll avoid the holiday rush, and the weather is ideal for enjoying the falls in their full glory!

Best Hikes

Let’s be real, you’ve probably heard the wild stories about people getting robbed at gunpoint in Brazil. And while I personally had zero issues, that doesn’t mean you should throw caution to the wind. Most of the time, I hike solo, but in Brazil? Not the best idea. Many trails pass through remote areas or favelas, and safety can be unpredictable. That’s why I highly recommend booking a guide, not only for safety but also because they know the best routes, hidden viewpoints, and will take some killer photos for you 📸

And don’t forget, travel insurance is essential for any adventure! Whether you’re hiking through remote landscapes or venturing into unknown territories, it’s there to cover unexpected mishaps, lost gear, or travel interruptions. Explore with peace of mind and focus on the journey ahead! Check options here

Pedra do Telégrafo (Rio de Janeiro)

Famous for its thrilling photo op where it looks like you’re hanging off a cliff. Book your guide here.

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Length: 3.4 km roundtrip
  • Height: 354 meters
  • Approx. time: 2 hours
  • Tips: Best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for fewer crowds. Wear sturdy shoes, and don’t forget water!

Morro Dois Irmãos (Rio de Janeiro)

This hike kicks off in Vidigal favela, which means adventure starts the moment you step in. Now, if you’re dreaming of that golden sunrise view, brace yourself—you’ll need to be halfway up by 3 AM. And while I love a good thrill, I also love my phone (arguably more than my own life), so I 100% recommend booking this guide, like I did. Plus the guide was super kind, made sure everything went smoothly, and even helped with taking awesome pictures. From the top, you’ll get an insane panoramic view of Rio, including Rocinha, the largest favela in Latin America, rumored to have around 200k residents, though no one really knows for sure. And the view? Absolutely next-level. Rio stretches out in all its chaotic, beautiful glory, making every step of the climb worth it. Book your hike here.

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Length: 3 km roundtrip
  • Height: 533 meters
  • Approx. time: 2 hours
  • Tips: The trail can be steep and rocky, so be prepared.

Favorite Spots

Dona Marta:

One of the best panoramic views of the city! But getting there on your own is pretty complicated. If you’re not arriving by car, getting out of this spot is gonna be a challenge (no signal for an Uber). And let’s be real, if you don’t want to be stranded at 5 AM, struggling through a not-so-friendly part of Brazil to catch the sunrise, you should definitely book a tour. I did, and honestly, I’m so glad I did. You’re not going to catch the sunrise alone, no matter what. Guides are literally racing to grab the best spots, so it’s way better to have one on your side, especially for this spot and Christ the Redeemer (that’s usually a package). My guide has been super kind and even snapped some beautiful pics of me, without me noticing (who doesn’t love that?). Bottom line? Don’t skip booking him here, it’s totally worth it!

Staying Connected in Brazil: Best SIM Cards & WiFi Speeds

Brazil is a land of vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and epic adventures, but staying connected is a must for navigation, photos, and booking your next experience.

Best Local SIM Cards
For reliable coverage across Brazil, Claro and TIM are supposed to be the best options. However, finding a SIM card shop or subscribing can be tricky! I tried two Claro shops in Rio, but they refused to let me subscribe since I didn’t have a resident permit. TIM did allow me to get a prepaid SIM, but they scammed me into signing up for a monthly contract instead of a prepaid plan. I had to block them the monthly payments and to this day, they’re still trying to charge me! (Luckily, Revolut has my back! Read more about Revolut here.)

Claro and Tim are supposed to be the only options with prepaid plans, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend them after my experience. So instead, skip the hassle: Airalo gives you instant, affordable, and hassle-free connectivity the moment you land. No physical SIMs, no surprise fees, NO SCAM, just seamless data with one easy app. Stay connected smarter, check options here.

WiFi Speeds
WiFi is widely available in cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, with speeds averaging 30-60 Mbps, perfect for streaming or keeping in touch. In rural areas, speeds can be slower, but that just means more time to enjoy the scenery.

Stay secure and unlock better deals with a VPN! Protect your data, access cheaper flights, and keep streaming your favorite Netflix shows from anywhere. Fast, private, and hassle-free browsing wherever you go! Get yours here.

Why Brazil is Also Great for Solo Travelers (and For Female Solo Travelers Too)

Brazil is a country that’s full of life and energy, and as a solo traveler, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore its beauty. That said, Brazil isn’t always the safest country, and as a solo traveler, you need to take certain precautions. In Rio, Ipanema and Leblon are considered safe. Ilha Grande felt “very” safe, and Foz do Iguaçu pretty relaxed. However, stick to well-lit, busy areas at night, and use trusted transportation apps like Uber and it’s always a good idea to keep your belongings close, and don’t flash expensive items in public.

That said, nothing bad happened to me, and I had an amazing time exploring Rio, Ilha Grande, and Foz do Iguaçu. Locals are friendly, and I felt safe during most of my trip, just be smart and stay aware!

Because You Can Never Be Too Careful: Top Safety Tips for Traveling in Brazil

General Solo Travel Tips

  1. Stay Connected: Share your itinerary with a friend or family member and check in regularly. Apps like Life360 or Google Maps sharing are great for this.

  2. Choose Safe Accommodation: Book accommodations with great reviews, preferably in well-lit, central areas (Ipanema and Leblon are considered safe). Consider female-only dorms or hostels.

  3. Learn Basic Phrases: If the local language isn’t English, learning basics like “help,” “please,” “thank you,” and directions can be invaluable.

  4. Arrive During the Day: Reaching a new destination during daylight hours makes navigating safer and easier.

  5. Blend In: Avoid flashy clothing or accessories. Dress like a local when possible to avoid unnecessary attention.

  6. Use Trusted Transportation: Only use official taxis, use Uber (favorite option), or public transportation recommended by locals or your accommodation.

  7. Carry a Dummy Wallet: Keep a small amount of cash in a decoy wallet to hand over in case of theft, while your actual valuables stay hidden.

  8. Pack Light and Smart: A smaller bag makes you more mobile and less of a target. Don’t forget essentials like a whistle, portable door lock, or personal safety alarm.

  9. Be Cautious with Alcohol: Know your limits and always keep an eye on your drink. Avoid accepting drinks from strangers.

Solo Female-Specific Tips

  1. Trust Your Gut: If a situation or person feels off, trust your instincts and leave. It’s better to be overly cautious than regretful.

  2. Choose Female-Friendly Activities: Many tours or classes cater specifically to women or have high participation rates of other solo female travelers.

  3. Book Group Tours for Safety: Joining small group tours for hikes or excursions can add safety and fun without feeling restrictive.

  4. Avoid Sharing Too Much Online: Avoid real-time updates of your location on social media to protect your privacy.

Bonus Tips

  1. Download Offline Maps: Apps like Google Maps and Maps.me work offline, helping you navigate without needing Wi-Fi.

  2. Have Emergency Numbers Handy: Keep a list of local emergency numbers, embassy contacts, and your insurance details.

  3. Dress Modestly if Needed: Research local customs regarding dress codes, especially in religious or rural areas.
