This hike kicks off in Vidigal favela, which means adventure starts the moment you step in. Now, if you’re dreaming of that golden sunrise view, brace yourself—you’ll need to be halfway up by 3 AM. And while I love a good thrill, I also love my phone (arguably more than my own life), so I 100% recommend booking this guide, like I did. Plus the guide was super kind, made sure everything went smoothly, and even helped with taking awesome pictures. From the top, you’ll get an insane panoramic view of Rio, including Rocinha, the largest favela in Latin America, rumored to have around 200k residents, though no one really knows for sure. Dona Marta:
One of the best panoramic views of the city! But getting there on your own is pretty complicated. If you’re not arriving by car, getting out of this spot is gonna be a challenge (no signal for an Uber). And let’s be real, if you don’t want to be stranded at 5 AM, struggling through a not-so-friendly part of Brazil to catch the sunrise, you should definitely book a tour. I did, and honestly, I’m so glad I did. You’re not going to catch the sunrise alone, no matter what. Guides are literally racing to grab the best spots, so it’s way better to have one on your side, especially for this spot and Christ the Redeemer (that’s usually a package). My guide has been super kind and even snapped some beautiful pics of me, without me noticing (who doesn’t love that?). Bottom line? Don’t skip booking him here, it’s totally worth it!

For reliable coverage across Brazil, Claro and TIM are supposed to be the best options. However, finding a SIM card shop or subscribing can be tricky! I tried two Claro shops in Rio, but they refused to let me subscribe since I didn’t have a resident permit. TIM did allow me to get a prepaid SIM, but they scammed me into signing up for a monthly contract instead of a prepaid plan.
