For those who prefer fewer crowds, late spring or early autumn is a great time to visit. The weather remains pleasant, and you can enjoy the landscapes without the summer rush. Even in winter, São Miguel has its charm, but I recommend avoiding December unless you’re a fan of soggy socks.

To truly experience the island, renting a car is a must. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore all the hidden gems São Miguel has to offer. I secured an automatic car for 12 days for just €41. Insane, right? Check deals here.
Not into driving? Public buses are a low-cost alternative but are infrequent, so plan ahead. Backpackers on a budget can also hitchhike—it’s generally safe on the island, but always trust your instincts. Bike rentals are another option for short distances and help keep costs low.

Lagoa do Fogo Hike
If you love nature and hiking, don’t miss Lagoa do Fogo. This 4 km moderate hike leads you to one of the most stunning crater lakes on the island.
