My Itinerary
Here’s how I made the most of my time on Big Island. I flew into Kailua Kona on the West side of the island (a.k.a. paradise) and picked up my trusty rental car (pro tip: without a car, Big Island is basically a maze you can’t escape). I stayed near Kailua Kona for a few days to soak up the sun, explore the beaches and hike. Then, I ventured east to Hilo, and experienced the lush side of the island. Trust me, East and West sides are like two completely different worlds, West is all about the beaches and sunshine, while East is a little more moody, with misty landscapes and rainforests. I flew out from Hilo for my next destination, but if you want to make the most of your time, split your stay between both coasts.
Note: Getting from one place to another without a car is near impossible. So, rent one, or else you’ll be walking a lot (and no one wants to walk 30 miles in the humidity, trust me). Book the best deals here
Tip: Booking a car rental from the East side and dropping it off on the West side is sometimes cheaper. Don’t ask me why, but it’s worth checking out.

Best Time to Visit
When should you visit Big Island? Well, the island is pretty much perfect year-round, but if you want to dodge the crowds (and the rain), the best time to visit is April to October. During these months, you’ll find sunny weather and low humidity on the West side, perfect for beach lovers. On the flip side, November to March is whale-watching season—so, if you’re into that, now’s your chance to see some of the biggest creatures on the planet in their natural habitat. Keep in mind, East side of the island can get rainy, so pack an umbrella if you’re planning to spend time around Hilo.
How to Get Around
Big Island is BIG, so how do you get around? Let’s talk options for every kind of traveler:
Rental cars are the way to go. Most companies offer cars, and the roads are in great shape. You can even rent a convertible to live your best island life (I highly recommend this). Check the best car deals here.
For Backpackers & Budget Travelers: Public transportation on Big Island is pretty sparse, so unless you’re renting a car, you’re better off sticking to taxis, ride shares, or renting a bike. Buses do exist, but they’re limited.
Where to Stay
The Big Island is epic, but let’s face it, it’s not exactly cheap. With its jaw-dropping landscapes and endless adventures, accommodations here can be pretty steep, and places tend to get booked up quickly. So when you find a spot that feels like your perfect slice of paradise, don’t wait—book it now! As of now, low-budget options are hard to come by, so expect to pay a bit more for your stay. But trust me, with all the incredible experiences waiting for you, it’s definitely worth the investment. 🌅

- Note: If you’re not up for the hike, rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle to access this stunning valley. It’s well worth the effort!
Akaka Falls

- Difficulty: Easy
- Frequentation: Very busy

Lava Hunting at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Witness Earth in action as molten lava shapes and reshapes the island before your eyes.
- Difficulty: Medium
- Frequentation: Moderate
- Length: Depends on lava flow

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Big Island
To really explore the highlights (volcanoes, beaches, and waterfalls), plan for at least 5 days on the island.
Like most Hawaiian islands, it can be pricey, but it’s totally possible to travel on a budget. Affordable accommodations, food trucks, and public transport are all good options.
It’s possible to drive around the island in one day, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The island is big, and it’s worth taking your time to explore each side.
