As a solo female traveler, I went looking for adventure, relaxation, and maybe a little Eat Pray Love moment, minus the drama. Spoiler: Costa Rica delivered.
You’ll find wildlife everywhere, from sleepy sloths to why-is-it-so-big iguanas. The locals, aka Ticos, are friendly, patient, and will make you feel welcome even if your Spanish only consists of “Hola” and “Gracias.” With pristine beaches, jungle hikes, and a bit of everything in between, Costa Rica is that perfect sweet spot for all types of travelers, from budget backpackers to bougie vacationers.
If you’re looking for some wilderness, gorgeous waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches, and amazing sunsets, Costa Rica is definitely the place for you! The flora and fauna are unbeatable, and you’ll be able to meet wild species almost anywhere. While some animals are dangerous, they usually only live in some National Parks that are very well maintained with clear paths, so hiking there alone isn’t a problem (exception for Corcovado National Park).

My Itinerary (aka What Worked and What Didn’t)
Despite the appearances, going from one place to another takes quite some time. Here’s what my Costa Rica road trip looked like:
- San Jose to La Fortuna – I drove straight to La Fortuna and stayed for a few nights. La Fortuna is famous for its stunning La Fortuna Waterfall, and Rio Celeste, a turquoise river you’ll swear is photoshopped. Both are absolute must-sees, and Rio Celeste’s turquoise blue water is unreal, but only visit on dry days or you’ll be disappointed.
- Monteverde – This one was a letdown. Monteverde is known for its cloud forests and hanging bridges, but I found it overpriced ($30+ just for a park, with broken bridges and $80+ for guided tours). You need a guide to see animals like sloths, and honestly, it’s not worth it unless you’re super into mystic forests.
- North Guanacaste Peninsula: Tamarindo, Samara, and Santa Teresa – Endless beaches, each with a unique vibe.
- Tamarindo: Popular surf town with a lot of nightlife.
- Samara: A quieter beach stop perfect for a chill few days.
- Santa Teresa: My favorite spot, international travelers, surfing vibes, yoga retreats, and the best vegan food scene.
- Uvita & Punta Leona – Uvita felt like a highway town where you even have to pay for beach access, but nearby hikes like Nauyaca Waterfall make it worthwhile. Punta Leona offers more relaxed beach vibes.
- Corcovado National Park (Skipped): Despite its incredible wildlife (jaguars, pumas, ocelots), Corcovado requires a big commitment. Guides are mandatory, roads are rough, and staying overnight costs a lot depending on the length of your stay. Stay here at least 2-3 nights for the full experience.
- (Optional) Puerto Viejo – Everyone raves about the Caribbean side. Sadly, I skipped it due to rain, but if you have time, go!
Best Time to Visit Costa Rica
Costa Rica has two seasons: wet (May-November) and dry (December-April). Avoid the heavy rainy months unless you’re into soggy hikes. Pacific and Caribbean coasts have opposite weather patterns, so check ahead. Dry season = more tourists, but hey, at least you’ll see the turquoise waterfalls.

- Rent a Car: Costa Rica was made for road trips. Rent a 4WD SUV because roads can get bumpy and questionable. Check deals here.
